Review: Somewhere Between (ABC) – Not so thrilling but full of killing

Somewhere Between

Somewhere Between

The first episode of ABC’s Somewhere Between chronicles the story leading up to the murder of Laura Price’s (Paula Patton, Single Ladies) preteen daughter Serena (newcomer Aria Birch), after which Laura is sent back in time to prevent it from happening. It’s like Groundhog Day, only Laura only has a single chance and if she fails, her daughter is dead for good.

Somewhere Between is a thriller, although the premiere episode lacked thrill. Of course, the emphasis on the relationship between mother and daughter adds something to the series, although one could argue with a span of 10 episodes, having one revolve solely about a relationship we can easily see is a good one is perhaps a bit of a waste. It definitely makes for a very non-thrilling opener to the series.

I do love the special friendship between Serena and her friend Ruby (Imogen Tear, The Magicians), whom Laura finds to be a bad influence. Serena is somewhere between eight and twelve years old, and already she is the only person Ruby can have a normal social relation with. Ruby may be a typical person, but her father is on death row and her uncle – who is a replacement father figure – is always in some sort of trouble, so you can’t really blame her for not understanding life.

ABC did not screen Somewhere Between for critics ahead of its premiere, which is usually not a good sign. It wasn’t a good sign in this case either. The series just isn’t thrilling like the trailer promised. The kids are a bit wonky in that they are Hollywood’s typical ‘young but very adult’ children, Laura seems to have one permanent emotion (although Patton does her best to provide some emotional fluctuations) and the dialogue is just not great.

However, there is a good chance the thrills are concentrated in later episodes. After all, the stakes are high, the time pressure is on, and with every episode the climax becomes nearer. The culprit is a serial killer, and Laura is trying to prevent Serena’s death by going after the man. Although packing up and going to the other end of the world is probably a better way to keep your child safe, this approach is definitely more exciting. So this series may be worth the investment, especially since it’s only ten episodes.

Somewhere Between airs on Mondays at 10/9c on ABC. The next episode will air in a special timeslot on Tuesday, August 22nd at 10/9c.
