Starring real-life best friends Esther Povitsky (Crazy Ex-girlfriend) and newcomer Benji Aflalo, Alone Together revolves around two platonic best friends of opposite genders. They are outcasts who say they hate the vain and status-obsessed culture but actually want nothing more than to be accepted by it.

Esther and Benji (which are also the characters’ names) have a complicated relationship, and while they detest the idea of sleeping with each other, many confuse whatever they have for a romantic relationship. But honestly, it mostly seems that they can’t stand each other but tolerate each other because they don’t really have anyone else to hang out with.

Esther and Benji (the characters, and probably the actors too) have become friends because they are both a little weird and nobody really gets them like they get each other. They loathe the status-obsessed culture, but at the same time either of them would do anything to be a part of that, even if it means humiliating the other. But in the end, they always come back to each other, because that is where they belong.

The fact that Esther and Benji are both jobless aspiring comedians makes Alone Together yet another one in that long list of autobiographical comedies about struggling comedians. And while we all fondly remember Seinfeld, there is nothing inherently fascinating about comedians, especially if they’re not very funny.

The humor in Alone Together is dry and slightly painful, and it takes some time to get used to that. But even then, if the show keeps going in this direction it can quickly become a bit disturbing. And that is quite risky for a network like Freeform, which only recently changed its name from ABC Family and is aimed predominantly at young women.

Alone Together airs on Wednesdays at 8:30/7:30c on Freeform.
