Still Star-Crossed

Romeo and Juliet are dead, but the feud is not over yet! In this ShondaLand period drama, Prince Escalus (Sterling Sulieman, One Love) has had it with the arguments between the Capulets and Montagues and he has found a solution: Rosaline (Lashana Lynch, Fast Girls), Juliet’s cousin, will have to marry Benvolio Montague (Wade Briggs, Please Like Me). They’re not too happy about that themselves, however, and they set out to avoid the marriage while still preventing the destruction of their families.

The trailer promises wonderful costumes, rebellious youngsters, and plenty of drama. The perfect ingredients for a successful period drama. Furthermore, although it builds on an existing story, it does not try to tell the same story once again. It’s no ‘Romeo & Juliet reborn’, it is something entirely new. Although I do fear that the tragic love story has only been added to the mix to pull viewers and will not likely have much to do with the series itself, which is both a shame and not very original.

Since it’s a Summer series, Still Star-Crossed has little competition. NBC will start to air sports entertainment competition Spartan: Ultimate Team Challenge June twelfth, two weeks after Still Star-Crossed has premiered. However, being a Summer series also means lower ratings, and although that is to be expected it still remains to be seen whether the series will be a success, or perhaps ABC anticipated it to not pull viewers in the first place and decided it could die silently in Summer.

Still Star-Crossed has concluded its run after 1 season.
