Preview: The Sinner (USA Network) – Could have been better
By Robin Oatley on July 19, 2017
is a drama anthology series based on the novel by Petra Hammesfahr. It will span eight episodes, and will star Jessica Biel (Total Recall). Biel stars as a young mother who, in an inexplicable fit or rage, commits a startling act of violence. She’s at the beach when she gets up off her blanket, picks up a knife, and stabs a man sitting in front of her to death. She herself has no idea why, but will now have to face the consequences of her horrifying actions.
The focus in the investigation of this crime is not the who, or the what, but the why. With the realization that, whatever the reason; this woman killed a man and will have to pay for it. Still, one investigator (portrayed by Bill Pullman, The Grudge) may prove to be a beacon of hope.
Although I like the story, I’m not sure how I feel about the execution. The trailer looks like ‘just another one of those shows’. In fact, I even have an idea of what could be the reason for this attack, just from the trailer, which leads me to believe this may be a very unoriginal series.
I think instead of the angle the series has taken now, I would have rather seen a focus on the struggle this woman must have getting to terms with what she did, knowing she took a life but not having a reason why, knowing she could go as far as she did without any reason whatsoever. I would have probably liked that better, because it would have been something entirely new. Right now, it seems this is just a different take on a murder mystery.
The Sinner airs on Wednesdays at 10/9c on USA Network.
