Syfy is ready to launch a new comedy series. Happy! is based on the graphic novel of the same name. The main character, Nick Sax is portrayed by Christopher Meloni (Law & Order: Special Victims Unit), an alcoholic ex-cop who turned to the dark side. Now operating as a hit-man, Sax lives his days with drugs and cynicism.

One day, this all comes to an end when he is shot and left for dead. Luckily paramedics come to the rescue, and when he is revived he sees a strange small, blue, winged unicorn that calls itself Happy (voiced by Patton Oswalt, The King Of Queens). Although Sax’ sanity is questionable, Happy convinces Sax to go rescue a little girl named Hailey. Hailey has been kidnapped by a deranged man and Happy, her imaginary friend, ‘escaped’ to ask Sax for help.

Happy! sounds like a pretty weird show, and judging from the trailer it is exactly that. However, behind the absurdness there seems to be an entertaining show. Meloni is nearly unrecognizable as Nick Sax and based on the first footage, manages to bring the character very well to life.

Although it’s questionable how long the absurdness is going to be entertaining, Happy! does have potential. Not in the least because it’s based on a popular comic book. Only time will tell if Meloni’s transfer to comedy is going to pay off.

Happy! airs on Wednesdays at 10/9c on Syfy.
