Preview: Friends With Better Lives (CBS) – The next How I Met Your Mother?

By on March 3, 2014

Right after the How I Met Your Mother series finale on March 31st, CBS will premiere Friends With Better Lives. This show is similarly themed in that it follows a group of thirtysomethings in different stages of their lives, and they all think the others have it better. The show stars James Van Der Beek (Dawson’s Creek) as Will, a gynaecologist who returns to the bachelor life after he discovers his wife cheated on him. Jules (Brooklyn Decker, The League) and Lowell (Rick Donald, House Husbands), who recently got engaged, are friends of him. Jules is an aspiring actress and Lowell a spiritual environmentalist. Then there’s Bobby and Andi (Kevin Connolly, Entourage, and Majandra Delfino, Roswell), the happily married couple with two kids. The final member of the group is Kate (Zoe Lister-Jones, Whitney) COO of a successful social media company.

From the short trailer, Friends With Better Lives looks like just another run-of-the-mill comedy. It is however hard to judge the quality of the series since there is so little material available. Of course, CBS houses many successful comedies that are essentially run-of-the-mill too, so that is not immediately a reason to write off this particular show.

The only real competition Friends With Better Lives will have is NBC’s The Voice. Other shows that air in the same timeslot are Bones, Star-Crossed and Dancing With The Stars. The question is whether the show will be able to fill the void left by How I Met Your Mother, since spring shows usually have a smaller chance of getting renewed than fall shows.

Friends With Better Lives has concluded its run after 1 season.
