Based on Caleb Carr’s bestseller, The Alienist is set in Gilded Age New York City and revolves around psychiatrist (‘alienist’) Laszlo Kreizler (Daniel Brühl, Inglorious Bastards) and newspaper reporter John Moore (Luke Evans, Fast & Furious 6), who are called upon by police commissioner Theodore Roosevelt (Brian Geraghty, Chicago P.D.) as they track down New York City’s first serial killer.

They are joined by the headstrong Sara Howard (Dakota Fanning, War Of The World’s), a secretary at the police headquarters. The trio combine traditional methods with Kreizler’s psychology to track down the killer.

The trailer for The Alienist looks almost feature film-like. Whether that is a good thing remains to be seen, because if the series does not live up to its trailer it could become quite the disappointment. Either way, there is a lot of potential in the show’s premise, which essentially boils down to a crime series, but set in such a different context that it could be a very interesting story.

The Alienist premieres on Monday, January 22nd at 9/8c.
