Last season, The Exorcist was one of only two shows on FOX for which our prediction was wrong. Looking at the ratings the show is now getting at the start of its second season, I still can’t wrap my head around why it was renewed in the first place. Perhaps this is the network’s way of saying: I give up on Fridays. Nonetheless, that makes The Exorcist a Certain Cancellation.

The Orville, the Seth MacFarlane space spoof that premiered to very solid ratings a few weeks ago, is now down to the bottom line of Adults 18-49 ratings that will still get the show comfortably renewed. If it goes any lower than where it is now, it is going to be a much more difficult decision for FOX, especially since a show like this probably has relatively high production costs due to lots of CGI.

Fellow freshman The Gifted premiered to much more favorable ratings than where The Orville is at, but the question, as always, is what the show does in week two. If it manages to stay above Lucifer and Lethal Weapon, that will be very good news for The Gifted. If it doesn’t, its fate will become much more dependent on what other shows are doing.

  • I love The Exorcist. I hope this prediction is wrong and we get a third season or at least get to finish up the ongoing story
