CBS has comedy troubles. It hasn’t been able to launch a truly successful show out of The Big Bang Theory (though The Millers is still getting respectable ratings), and with How I Met Your Mother ending this year, it has added an extra hour of comedy this year to try out lots of new shows. None of them have actually been successful, though.

Provided that CBS won’t drop the extra comedy hour already after one try, and that it doesn’t want to launch more than 3 or 4 new comedies next year, 4 or 5 need to be cancelled. With How I Met Your Mother already gone by then (and probably replaced by spin-off How I Met Your Dad), and The Big Bang Theory, The Millers and 2 Broke Girls renewed, that means at least three of Mom, Mike & Molly, Two And A Half Men and the upcoming Bad Teacher and Friends With Better Lives need to be cancelled.

Two And A Half Men is up for contract negotiations, and while Ashton Kutcher and Jon Cryer are the highest paid actors on TV, the ratings aren’t exactly mirroring that. On the other hand, ad spots on the show still cost advertisers dearly. Your guess is as good as mine, making the show a Toss Up. For the rest of those shows, it’s a matter of waiting and seeing what happens in midseason.

In the drama section, The Good Wife was on an impressive ratings growth for three weeks, but dropped back down this week to its old levels. While we had in mind to upgrade it this week to a Toss Up, that is of course not happening now.

CBS has been canceling 3 or 4 dramas for a couple of years now, so it’s reasonable to believe they will do the same this year. With Hostages as the obvious first victim, at least two more need to go. Sunday dramas The Good Wife and The Mentalist are at roughly the same levels as Friday police shows Hawaii Five-0 and Blue Bloods, and since total viewership is lower on Fridays, the Sunday dramas are probably next. The possible fourth cancelled drama will be one of the still-to-premiere Intelligence and the Friday shows, but since CBS has dropped a drama hour this year, there might be no fourth.
