ABC has cancelled freshman comedy Back In The Game by denying it a nine-back order, even though the network recently ordered extra scripts. The 13 episodes that were ordered back in May will still be airing, most likely in the same Wednesdays at 8:30/7:30c timeslot.
Both new Tuesday comedies, Trophy Wife and The Goldbergs did get the coveted nine-back order, which means that both shows have had their episode order upped by nine, to a total of 22 episodes in their first seasons.
Clearly, the ABC executives were on the fence about Super Fun Night, that other freshman comedy with movie star Rebel Wilson, which got the coveted post-Modern Family timeslot but was torn down critically and didn’t impress in the ratings. Perhaps a little too soon to make an actual decision, but forced to do something (otherwise any extra ordered episodes won’t be ready in time), ABC gave the struggling show four more episodes to prove itself.
